One in three ready to pay more for green travel
As many as 34% of British holidaymakers are willing to spend more to reduce the impact of travelling on the environment, according to a survey conducted by email research specialists, emedia, using their RapidResearch service. The survey also reveals that travellers are becoming increasingly concerned about the effect of their consumer habits on the planet. An overwhelming 76% more respondents said they would take into account environmental impact when booking their holiday this year compared with last year. Tourists are prepared to adopt several measures to be more eco-friendly, including offsetting arrangements (33%), use of an alternative mode of transport (30%), travelling closer to home (28%) or paying a green tax on fares (25%). Awareness of environmental sustainability is strong amongst holidaymakers, with 64% believing that travel has a negative impact on the planet. However emedia’s survey indicates there is still an 'action gap', with only 19% of those surveyed willing to change their travel behaviour in 2007. 'Green' travel may not have 'taken off' till now due to consumers’ scepticism. The research shows that over half (57%) of respondents are yet to be convinced that a shift in their attitude will make a difference. “A 76% growth in the number of respondents from 2006 to 2007 who are ready to take into account environmental impact when booking holidays is staggering,” says David Clark, managing director at emedia. “Companies need to position their holiday and leisure products in the context of green messages to stay in tune with market behaviours. Personal Travel Bulletin readers are typically well paid, well educated management professionals. So we think it's likely that these changes are occurring fastest amongst those who travel frequently and spend more.” Keith Richards, head of consumer affairs at ABTA, comments “Consumers can only make informed decisions if they have clear information about the impact of what they do, good or bad. Currently there’s too little reliable information out there. Air passengers already pay £1.8 billion a year to the Government Air Passenger Duty tax. Not a penny of which is spent on improving the environment or incentivising change. This probably explains the gap between consumer desire and action.” Michael Buick, communication manager at Climate Care, one of the leading carbon offsetting providers, adds "With more people prepared to pay extra than those prepared to change their behaviour, carbon offsets clearly have an important role in engaging the many rather than the few. Paying a transparent carbon price per trip, with the money raised funding carbon reductions elsewhere, is a great first step towards responsible travel." With the growing concern about climate change amongst holidaymakers, emedia intends to run the survey again within 12 months to establish whether the 'action gap' is likely to be reduced. emedia's online surveys quickly and effectively measure responses at a point in time and the same survey may, when executed at a different time, yield different results. Rate of change will vary according to whether the responses are based on knowledge, fashion, attitude or value, ordered by decreasing rate of change. emedia surveys attract sufficient responses to be statistically representative and prove to be useful for later comparison.

Barclays Travel Insurance - Press Release
Barclays Travel Insurance reports winter tourists prefer down under to down hill

Research from Barclays Travel Insurance has shown that Melbourne and Sydney have seen a huge increase in the number of visiting British tourists this winter as millions opted to take in the English cricket team’s Ashes whitewash rather than the white slopes of a ski holiday.

The research from Barclays Travel Insurance indicates that Sydney has seen a 25% increase in Brits visiting the city whilst Melbourne welcomed a massive 140% more British tourists than last year. The Australian cities are also two of the destinations with the biggest increase in the amount spent by British tourists with spending in Melbourne increasing by 178%.

Other destinations which are seeing an upsurge in UK visitors include Hong Kong and Phuket - both popular stop-offs on route to Australia - and New York, where shoppers have been flocking to take advantage of the strong pound/dollar exchange rate

The top 5 list of destinations and percentage increases by British visitor numbers from December 2005-January 2006 compared with December 2006-January 2007 were:

1. Melbourne 140%
2. Sydney 25%
3. Phuket 24%
4. Hong Kong 21%

5. Dubai 15%

In contrast, spending and visitor numbers to European ski resorts such as Meribel, Val D'Isere and Chamonix were down by up to 18% on the same time last year, which was not helped by the limited snow fall which have occurred so far this season across these regions.

The list of the top six ski destinations and percentage changes by British visitor numbers and spending from December 2005-January 2006 compared with December 2006-January 2007 shows:

1. Chamonix -18%, spending -19%
2. Val D'Isere -12%, spending +9%
3. Morzine -12%, spending -1%
4. Meribel -2%, spending 0%
5. Courchevel +1%, spending +18%
6. Verbier +13%, spending +8%

The top five destinations measured by the numbers of visiting British tourists across December and January are currently Paris, Sydney, Dublin, New York and Dubai. Las Vegas, Verbier and Phuket are the destinations where Brits spend the most – an average of almost £400 each - whilst British visitors to Dublin, Paris and Prague spend less than £100 each.

Mark Till, Marketing Director for Barclays Insurance, comments: "Long haul breaks seem to be becoming increasingly popular with British holidaymakers over the Christmas and New Year period. Flights are getting cheaper and Brits are prepared to trek further for the chance of some proper winter sunshine. Of course this year the numbers travelling to Australia were boosted further by the added attraction of the Ashes taking place whilst Europe's slow start to the ski season due to a lack of snow has also encouraged tourists to look elsewhere."

Barclays offers travel insurance for single and annual multiple trips across the world including winter sports cover. For more information, a quote and a 10% online discount visit the Barclays Insurance site.

Are you paying too too much for holiday insurance?
Holidaymakers are set to have their pockets picked before they even leave home this summer by purchasing single trip travel insurance, warns Moneynet.

“Along with remedies for the Turkey Trots, travel insurance is viewed by many as a tiresome necessity when making holiday plans and is often purchased without a second thought,” said Moneynet managing director Richard Brown.

“But whilst it’s better to have than not have, travellers are spending far more than they need to by purchasing over-priced policies to cover just one holiday – and then doing the same again for each trip abroad.”

Holidaymakers are also at risk of buying policies with inappropriate levels of cover, either too high or too low, simply because they don’t read the small print.

“Whilst it's crucial to ensure that the level of cover is sufficient for your needs, it's equally important to ensure that you are not paying for unnecessarily high levels of cover,” added Brown. “Some policies, for example, offer up to £10million of medical expenses cover when travelling in Europe. It's difficult to see how this level of cover could ever be required.”

Research by Moneynet into the cost of single trip policies compared to annual cover reveals the huge chasm between the dearest and the cheapest policies on offer this summer.

A single trip policy with the Post Office for a family of four travelling to Europe costs £50.00 but for just £12.18 extra they could insure themselves for a whole year with Insure & Go via Moneynet's search facility.

You don't need to speak the lingo to understand the savings to be made by shopping around before you buy.

“The days of the annual two-week trip to the Costas is long gone,” said Brown. “With growing numbers of people making two or three trips abroad each year these days, it makes no sense to buy several insurance policies when an annual multi-trip policy will cost you less. That way, you're covered no matter where you go and you’ve saved cash that’s better spent on enjoying yourself.”

For worldwide travelling, the savings really stack up. A family of four purchasing a policy from Europ Assistance to cover them for multi-trip worldwide travel would have to fork out a whopping £246.27, but a short trip to the computer could save them £91 with similar cover from the Post Office coming up as a best buy this time - enough for a bargain flight to Europe!

“The comfort of your own computer is the best place to buy any kind of insurance,” said Brown. “Booking a holiday is exciting – buying travel insurance is not and consequently few people are likely to read the small print whilst looking at pictures of swimming pools. Buying online means you can shop around for the best value and take the time to read up on exactly what you will – and won't - be covered for should you need to make a claim.”

New research into DVT
A study carried out at Leicester and Aberdeen universities has found that Deep-Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is not caused by low cabin pressure in aircraft.

Dr William Toff is reported to have said thay they found no evidence that the low pressure and low oxygen activate blood clotting.

But Dr Toff went on to say that we know from many other studies that prolonged sitting, such as during long journeys by air, road or rail, does increase the rist of DVT.

The overall risk of thrombosis after a long-haul flight is about 1 in 2000 he said

Travel Tips For Summer
As we pack our bags in preparation for our summer holidays 67% of us will ensure they pack enough food and water for the journey, but only 52% of us will make sure that we prepare against travel sickness.

Three quarters of people in the UK suffer from travel sickness, many of them children, so it's important to include a travel sickness remedy on your list of holiday essentials.

These simple steps from Stugeron15 can also help to prevent travel sickness so it doesn't ruin your holiday:

• Plan ahead – take a travel sickness remedy that's suitable for the family like Stugeron15 two hours before travelling

• Keep entertained – handheld DVD players or computer games are great at helping to pass the time on a long journey

• Avoid alcohol and large meals – before, during and shortly after travelling

• Get fresh air – avoid stuffy or fume laden atmospheres

• Choose your seating – when travelling by bus, choose a seat by the wheels where the motion is less; on ships stay in the centre of the vessel; and if travelling by plane, try to sit in the area over the wings.

Gecko Travel names top 5 places to visit
8 May 2006 - Gecko Travel names the top five 'really' amazing places you have to visit before you can say I'm well-travelled

Racking up experiences before you're thirty is a popular maxim, but let's face it 30 is a pretty insignificant number as intrepid travellers normally have a never ending list of places to travel to, and with an ageing population and so many new locations still opening up in remote SE Asia, to put a time limit on being well-travelled is perhaps nonsensical.

Adventure travel certainly has no limits on age and Gecko Travel has supporters from the age of three to 80 plus who have had memorable experiences on their organised tours. Providing truly off the beaten track experiences, the tour operator certainly incorporates some unrivalled travel prospects within it's itineraries, and as voted by their previous customers, here are Gecko Travel's top five 'really' amazing places you have to visit before you can say I'm well travelled. Covering remote areas and tribes often untouched by more mainstream travel companies the list proves it is not age that defines being well travelled, but the places themselves which define the well travelled amongst us.

1. Lai Chau (Vietnam) – A fascinating backwater and a town barely half a mile long, with atmospheric accommodation situated in the heart of the valley making this the ultimate 'getting away from it all' location
Travellers trek through tree lined paths on a four-hour excursion and tourist free zone – the occasional villager and his water buffalo passing through. The destination, a Blue H'mong village in Pu Dau, a friendly stopover for lunch and a breathtaking view overlooking the valley below leaves travellers speechless. New Mountains & Hill Tribes tour FROM £1,365pp, (14/20-days).

2. Ban Traat Mountain, (Thailand) – Winding your way through the forest, the Gecko Travel guide signals to the Sakai villagers that the tourist party has arrived. The village visit is far removed from the more mainstream contrived tribal encounter, as this is a nomadic tribe always on the move, and therefore not a guaranteed listing on the itinerary.
Travellers meet first with the Sakai chief who shares gifts with the villagers and in turn the villagers share their experiences and way of life, including blowpipe skills. A local guide ensures everyone can share the experience. Northern Mountains, Southern Beaches tour FROM £1,485, (21-days).

3. Bai Tu Long Bay (Vietnam) – There is just something 'awesome' about Halong Bay with it's huge limestone escarpments rising out of the water.
These huge monuments created by forces of nature over millions of years are fascinating in themselves, but Gecko Travel's tour goes one step further heading to Bai Tu Long Bay a little known paradise not yet on the tourist trail, incorporating a stay on the remote Quan Lan Island as opposed to the more well-visited Cat Ba. New Mountains and Hilltribes tour FROM £1,365pp, (14/20-days).

4. Belum Park (Malaysia) – Travellers might assume wrongly that there is little left to discover in Peninsular Malaysia, as Gecko Travel is still one of very few operators travelling to the Royal Belum State Park. An unexplored haven for wildlife and nature lovers the park itself is reported to house one of the best preserved areas of virgin rainforest in SE Asia.
The forest is home to one of the largest concentrations of elephants, tigers and otters in Malaysia, and competes with Sarawak, once described as the 'land of the hornbills', with the Malaysian Nature Society recently recording over 10 species of Malaysian hornbills in the area. Rafflesia viewing, nature treks with the Orang Asli and real camping in the jungle are all part of the atmospheric experience. Malaysia Coast to Coast tour FROM £1,475pp, (17-days).

5. Pha Taem National Park (Thailand) – Situated on the North Eastern side of Thailand, Pha Taem, provides a living picture of a pre-historic age with spectacular rock paintings and formations, giving the impression of a large rock garden. The wall paintings, discovered by a professor and his students in 1981, are a living museum and offer an insight into primitive life in a bygone era. On Pha Taem Cliff, the paintings stretch out over 180 metres, with around 300 separate images – more than anywhere else in Thailand. The park also hosts a series of waterfalls best viewed in the rainy season from June to October. Emerald Triangle tour FROM £1,450pp, (17-days).

Prices include, return flight, all accommodation, all meals, (except Vietnam which is BandB), activities and entrances, the tour leader, local guides as appropriate and transport.

Making travelling easier for people with diabetes
Having diabetes and travelling is easy with new Desang kitbags

Desang Ltd sells kitbags for people with diabetes – estimated at 2 million people in the UK today. The kitbags keep everything in one place, making living with the condition just that little bit easier. And it’s nice-looking too, made of leather, resembling a Filofax. These are properly designed carry cases where diabetics can keep their equipment be they at home or abroad.

Some people are buying a kitbag to organise themselves. Others, to organise a partner or a child and some are buying both models. Many find them very useful for holidays or business travel. Having a professional looking bag not only makes going through customs less of a hassle, but it also fits in with a working lifestyle.

Sue Marshall, founder of Desang Ltd. says, "Like many people, I had a busy life. Like some of them, I had diabetes too, which meant I had to be extra organised. I didn't let having diabetes stand in my way, but as I had to carry around various bits and bobs to control it, I wanted something practical but professional to house it all in. I played around with ideas and researched the size of the market and thought, 'I can't be the only one who could do with this kind of specialised carry case'. It was hardly an overnight insight -- more a gradual realisation that there had to be a role in many diabetic's lives for a kitbag such as the one I ended up designing. Judging by the feedback I've had, I was right.”

The Classic model fits:
• Blood test machine
• Finger pricker
• Spare sensors and lancets
• Two insulin injection pens
• Spare pen refills and needles
• Blood test diary and pen
• Diabetes ID
• It can also carry syringes and insulin bottles.
• Extra space for you to use as you see fit, such as to carry tissues or a hypo treatment.

The Classic: H 23cm; W 17cm; D 5cm; Wt: (when empty): 300g. Made of leather, it costs £39.99.

The Slim model fits:
• Blood test machine
• Finger pricker
• Spare sensors and lancets
• One insulin injection pen
• Spare pen refills and needles
• Blood test diary and pen

The Slim: H 20cm; W 12cm; D 4cm; Wt (when empty): 200g. Made of leather, it costs £29.99

Don't panic if you lose your luggage!
Lost luggage is a problem, but it needn't leave you with your knickers in a twist. The next time you travel by air, there is a reasonable chance that your undies – as well as the rest of your belongings – will disappear from the airline's radar.

According to SITA, the company that airlines use to track lost luggage in 220 countries and territories, the air transport industry is losing in the region of $2.5 billion annually because of misconnects and mishandled baggage.

In a report published this week, SITA also revealed that on current calculations 30 million bags are mishandled annually with the number of bags lost or stolen running at about 204,000 per annum.

However, according to Adam Dalby, Managing Director of i-TRAK, a company that identifies travellers' luggage similar to how a car number plate is able to locate the owner of the car, the problem is probably worse than SITA reports.

"SITA claims that 30 million bags are mishandled every year and yet only 204,000 are lost," he comments. "In reality this figure is probably 5-10 times higher. Talk to any holiday insurance company and they will tell you that their biggest claim is lost luggage."

"Given the scale of the lost luggage problem, travellers simply cannot abrogate responsibility for the safety of their luggage and trust to luck that the airlines will look after it for them. The airline industry is under such commercial pressure that the need to cut costs means the problem is certainly not going to get better and if anything will become even worse."

One solution constantly touted is RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), however, according to Dalby: "Thinking RFID is the solution to eradicating the nightmare of lost luggage globally is very premature. Currently it would be a bit like owning a mobile phone handset without the networks for coverage - great piece of technology but no service to use it. It requires massive infrastructure being built into every airport in the world to be a true solution."

So where does that leave the traveller? One solution, perhaps, is for air passengers to travel lightly and cram all of their garments into a single piece of hand luggage. Let's face it, most people should travel with fewer clothes. Who's going to need a woolly pullover in the sunshine in the Algarve?!

But of course people do like to account for all possibilities. We are British, after all. Unexpected rain in the Med. A heatwave in Iceland. It happens!

Meanwhile, i-TRAK is one service that is capable of enabling airlines to reunite passengers with their lost belongings. It works by enabling airlines to send a message directly to the owner through their internal systems, including phone, email, Internet and direct airline link. i-TRAK sends information through an SMS message, by email, over the Internet or by phone. In short, the traveller has a fast and easy method of getting their luggage back.

So the next time you travel and feel slightly exposed, you've several choices: pray that your luggage appears on the conveyor belt, travel lightly, or use a service like i-TRAK and make sure you're covered.

About i-TRAK
i-TRAK was founded in 2000 to provide luggage and personal item tracking solutions for travellers and the travel industry. i-TRAK for luggage was launched in January 2003 and was followed by i-TRAK micro labels for passports and other travel items in February 2006.

Business travel to soar by 2015
Business travel to soar by 2015, announces Barclaycard

23/2/2006

The research reveals that long haul air and rail services will see the most growth with business travel to global destinations expected to increase. Distance travelled per week will increase to approximately 700 miles per person, compared to 609 miles currently. In addition business people will on average spend an extra night away from home each month, up from 4.1 nights in 2005/6 to 5.2 nights in 2015.

The tenth anniversary results of the annual Barclaycard Business Travel Survey reveals that whilst distances travelled for business travel are predicted to increase, growth will be seen at a slower rate than the 32% increase seen between 1996/7 and 2005/6.

Meanwhile, individual days away for business per week will decrease to 2.0 in 2015, from 2.4 in 2005/6. This can largely be out down to the increasing role of technology. The use of video conferencing, for example, is expected to be used by 50% of workers by 2015, compared to 26% currently.

Tim Carlier of Barclaycard Business comments, "These trends have significant implications for the business travel industry. Long distance travel providers will need to respond to the increasingly demanding business traveller who is travelling further distances for longer periods of time. Furthermore, the decline in shorter journeys may provide a challenge for the industry to consider other ways in which to grow business."

Air travel
With long haul travel increasing, the number of flights taken per business traveller will increase by 12% from 7.6 flights per year in 2005/6 to 8.5 flights in 2015. Low cost air travel is predicted to be near saturation point and will therefore level off, with 74% of business travellers expected to use these services in 2015, no change from 2005/6.
